Joint Statement on Strong Opposition of Contracting out Recreational and Sports Facilities Service in HKUST
Front line contract staff has been informed that their contracts will not be renewed with effective from 30 June and will be transferred to the new appointed contractor instead of directly employed by the university authority. However, not only no concrete commitment on fully employing the whole existing staff team has been made, neither the salary, employment benefits nor any relating details have been mentioned. The recreational and sports facilities service team has no bargaining power nor being involved in the discussion process between the university authority and the contractor, while they are passively suppressed with no leverage in hand, which above all is only a total injustice action. The general contract-out services always fall on those who have the most ‘economic one’ among the bidders, which the cost saved is absolutely a reflection on the exfoliation from the employees. We strongly condemn the university authority of such irresponsible behavior as an unscrupulous employer, and we strongly oppose the contract-out of the student facilities and sports facilities services.

Workers protest against “redeployment” and demand reelection of the union
Yesterday, October 14, about three hundred “redeployed” BYD’s sales workers protested against BYD at the front gate of its plant in Pingshan, Shenzen. The protest was soon stopped by the company security (Please refer to the picture below). BYD, the Chinese battery and auto maker backed by billionaire Warren Buffett, started to restructure its sales department and “redeploy” its employees to other departments or stop their duties in September this year.

About 300 retrenched BYD employees have signed up, and elected representatives, and hire a lawyer to defend their rights. Today some protesters were beaten by the security guards, and got hurt. The workers, escorted by colleagues were sent to hospital. The actual situation is still need to be confirmed. Some were stuck on the ground and could not move. They were then carried away by ambulance.

China: ACFTU representing workers’ interests on ILO governing body – that cannot be serious!
In June 2011 the All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) was elected by the ILO workers’ group to the ILO Governing Body. Before taking up the issues arising from the presence of the ACFTU on the ILO Governing Body (on which it presumably now sits as a representative of workers' interests and defender of workers' rights), I have to reiterate my fundamental belief that any action that legitimates the ACFTU needs to be seriously questioned.

Maids in Hong Kong sue for residency rights
Hong Kong is set to hear later this month a Filipino domestic helper’s legal bid for permanent residency in the southern Chinese city, in a landmark case that has sparked heated debate. A successful legal challenge will be a first of its kind in Asia, activists said, and a recognition of rights and equality for domestic workers, who are mostly from labor-exporting countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia.
