Concerning cadmium poisoning of workers at Gold Peak Facilities. A Letter to Gold Peak Industries by the Member of the Danish parliament

Concerning cadmium poisoning of workers at Gold Peak Facilities

Dear Mr. Lo Chung Wing and Gold Peak shareholders,

I, member of the Danish parliament, have been informed by several Hong Kong based Trade Unions and NGOs, that workers on Gold Peak factories have been severely poisoned by Cadmium as a result of lack of security measures.

I understand that on the 13th September Gold Peak Industries will be holding its AGM in Hong Kong. I wish to take this opportunity to address the AGM in order to express my support for the struggle of workers to gain adequate compensation for what appears to be excessive cadmium levels and cadmium poisoning contracted while at work for Gold Peak Industrial Holding Ltd.

I am also writing to express my protest against the commencement of legal action you have taken against three Hong Kong groups, for their support of the workers’ effort in making their case heard. I deplore the use of threatening legal action to silence the legitimate support the groups are showing to these workers.

I look forward to receive an answer from your company commenting on this preoccupying case.

The issue is of interest to the Danish consumers as several retailers in Denmark are selling GP products. Therefore I have sent a letter to the GPBM Nordic AB, asking them to comment on the case. Furthermore I have sent letters to the known retailers of GP products in Denmark providing them with information regarding the case and asking them to react upon it.

Finally I have sent the information regarding this case to relevant Danish trade unions.

I remain committed to ensuring justice for the workers and call for the following:

  1. Gold Peak should immediately implement necessary safety standards also covering subcontractors;
  2. Gold Peak should immediately provide the affected workers fair and decent compensation;
  3. Gold Peak should stop the humiliating body-checks and provide recognized and professional medical checkups to its workers;
  4. Gold Peak should stop threatening its workers and apologise for any harassment, injustice and discrimination directed at them. It should undertake to effect genuine negotiations with the workers involved.
  5. Gold Peak should withdraw its legal action against the three Hong Kong groups.

Yours sincerely,

Mr. Frank Aaen
Member of the Danish Parliament
