Railway Workers at Heilongjiang City demand Re-election of Workplace Union to Resist Downsizing

Editor notes: It has been official policy in China to downsize the number of railway employees. In Heilongjiang City, a north east Chinese city, the local railway bureau forced workers to sign a blank contract so that the adminstration can fill in the blank with whatever conditions they like as a step to large scale dismissal.

Another outragous trick was to send hundreds of workers to the hospital and have them all certified as having lost their ability to work, also as a step to lay them off. One worker, Zhu Chunsheng, asked the workplace union chairperson to act to defend the workers' interest, but this request was refused. He then went forward to launch a signature campaign among workers. He was immediately warned by local police that there would be retaliation if he continues. This report is avaliable in Chinese only.
